Black Rock is a Bayside suburb located between Sandringham and Beaumaris, 18 kilometres southeast of Melbourne’s central business district. This was named after Black Rock House, a magnificent house constructed in 1856 in Dublin’s Black Rock neighbourhood by Charles Hotson Ebden. Ebden had previously worked as a pastoralist in Port Phillip, a merchant, and a Member of Parliament for the Brighton district in Victoria. Black Rock House is included on the National Estates Register.
Half Moon Bay and Red Bluff were famous beach spots in Black Rock. The name of the bluff derives from the oxidised iron colour of the cliffs (as opposed to ‘Black Rock,’ which has no geological connection).
